“Language is that instrument of thinking together.”
- Maria Montessori
Dr. Montessori observed that children have a thirst for language and communication. Communication allows the child to express their needs and ideas to others. Through language we are able to cooperate, collaborate, receive knowledge and pass knowledge to others. Initially we offer children vocabulary of objects they have come across in their lives. After exploring speech we explore the symbols of our language through the sandpaper letters. Once children have developed the correct pencil grip we want children to learn how to write in order to provide them with the means of expressing themselves. After writing we introduce reading, giving them the ability to learn something new from someone else’s thoughts. Maintaining the relationship between language and communication helps children gain proficiency with all aspects of language.
