Māori Hill Montessori Preschool runs a programme based on the philosophy and educational discoveries of Dr Maria Montessori (1870-1952), where a prepared environment, activities and specially prepared materials are designed to meet the individual needs of children, reflect their culture and aid in their self-construction.
We believe in the innate potential of each child and recognise their unique absorbent mind and sensitive periods as tools that enable them to develop and gain knowledge of their environment.
We value the multicultural diversity that children and their families and whānau bring to the preschool. We acknowledge Te Tiriti o Waitangi and incorporate Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori into our daily routines.
Our commitment to the Montessori philosophy is alongside out commitment to the principles of Te Whāriki, the New Zealand curriculum for early childhood education. Te Whāriki focusses on holistic development, empowerment, and whānau and community relationships, through wellbeing, belonging, contribution, communication and exploration. In line with Te Whāriki, our aim is that children will grow up as competent and confident communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society.
Our Curriculum
Practical Life
“Any child who is self-sufficient, who can tie their shoes, dress or undress themself, reflects in their joy and sense of achievement the image of human dignity which is derived from a sense of independence.”
Cultural Studies
"The needs of mankind are universal. Our means of meeting them create the richness and diversity of the planet. The Montessori child should come to relish the texture of that diversity."
Outside Classroom
“There must be provision for the child to have contact with nature; to understand and appreciate the order, the harmony and the beauty in nature.”
Mathematics
"Great creations come from the mathematical mind, so we must always consider all that is mathematical as a means of mental development. It is certain that mathematics organize the abstract path of the mind, so we must offer it at an early age, in a clear and very accessible manner, as a stimulus to the child whose mind is yet to be organized."
